Everything nice that happened in a month

Seems like its just yesterday when I started to work, now Im already working for a month! Getting more used to the job scope and Im loving it! Pretty good working environment with good relations with my colleagues! Most are really nice. In the sense, they guide me along and teach me a lot of things! Boss' temperamental hahah i guess that applies to most lady boss...

Its my first office job, so I learnt a lot in the sense of how things work and how people communicates etc its interesting in both good and bad ways haha

I am working in Genting Singapore! know RWS? yup, RWS is a subsidiary of our company! And, I realised the age group is quite young! Just the corporate office itself, currently, I am aware of 3 school friends who are working in it! About the perks, I get to travel to Sentosa for lunch and when I am asked to go over.. And, to enter USS for free! But I cant play the rides la :(

Everyone's favourite minions!! I saw them when I was about to exit the USS!

They are so fat Im gonna dieee!!!! hehehehhe think Im getting fatter too! Thanks to all good food around my office heheehe the food are pricey too~

Also, last Friday, I had my convocation! Marks the end of my routined school life! The registration for the convocation starts in early April, convocation/graduation ceremony itself is optional. Not all students went for it though. For my year (2014 May), there were 6 sessions. 2 sessions each day. Mine is on the morning of the last day. Usually, span from wednesday to friday.

Gown/Mortarboard collection is in mid April at Serangoon Broadway Studio. Some ulu place, opposite of the new MOM building.

A day before my convocation, I was thinking since the ceremony starts at 10am, students got to sit at 915am so what time do the students got to reach to register and put on the gown?? (Take Note: please log on to your SIM portal aka SIMCONNECT, under the graduation tab, there will be details on registration time!) Apparently, I read it in some blog, that mentioned that registration time is from 8-9am!

For my convocation, I kept it pretty low profile because I didnt want to trouble friends to travel down all the way. But anyway, just a short rant. well, hopefully it will be a short one hhaha I feel, if your friends are true friends, even if they are not studying in SIM or do not have classes that day, they will be down to support even without having you to personally ask them to. They will naturally ask for your convocation date and time. Apparently, I have friends who go, "ohh your convocation on friday, ahh i dont have class leh cannot be down" you get my point? its not as if they need to have class, to travel to school to pass some well wishes to their friends. of course, well wishes delivered through sms/whatsapp are sincere wishes as well, but it will be better if they are physically down right? Imagine having to go for convocation without any friends wishing you when all the others graduates have. (end of rant) hahaha before i continue to rant on and on like one auntie.

Receiving 2 awards. oh by the way, I had the misconception that the VIP Reception you see during every graduation (the one at the corner near the Lifts in Block A atrium) is for all First Class Graduates. No. Its for award winning students. i.e. a few top FCH graduates for the course, or the top Second upper class graduate if there are not FCH grads in the course

wahlao, we got to queue up to take photo with this banner...

Like i captioned it in Facebook, "I believe I can fly~~~" lol super funny

with my bro~

Elaine and the lighting mortarboard hahahahah was throwing the mortarboard and this photo captured me catching the falling mortarboard

My mom and bro! Papa was working and meimei going for a uni interview!

ok thatz about it! byebyeee~

1 month

oh hi Im back after nearly a month... Been busy with watching Hallyu drama, searching for jobs, and planning for DM and SUJ Exchange!

Just wrote my letter to Ikeda Sensei! Both my victories for last year and past months and my resolutions from now on. Its refreshing to think back! and full of conviction and determination while planning ahead! Its March already! So fast!

Anyway, Ill be slowly (im slow enough already =.=) sending my resume to the private firms as I have not been doing so... Only sending to banks and government sector which take super long time to get back. Gotta act fast! Thankful for my friends and seniors in faith around and of cos to have sensei guidance to guide me along when Im all confused, low morale, low life condition, lost etc... Thank you~

Did I mention that I won hotel voucher in Seoul Myeong Dong in Feb/Jan???? Yah... only hotel voucher. Still contemplating if I should fly over this spring! But could only bring either 1 other or 3 other. Need to check the room occupancy. If Im going, it will most probably be after my convocation or end March? I havent book air tickets yet!!!! Just a pretty short trip in Seoul and maybe somewhere outside Seoul that I can travel to via the subway la :)

In late Feb, I received one letter from SIM! Make a guess? Its commendation letter! Received UOL Top Student Award- Bronze for my course. Not sure if that means Im the top 3? No idea how many recipient per award. And, the SIM Special Recognition Award! #justsayin to keep track of things! I only write online diary which is this... so yah... not flaunting or what. Just wanna write down for memories sake :) So how do I feel after receiving? Both happy for the money and upset cos this makes me look even cui-er that I STILL COULDNT FIND A JOB :( Just like the upset me is not sad enough, my sister asked me to sign a declaration form that Im an unemployed for University application :(((( double kill (im fine now anyway still fighting strong! other people are challenging even tougher things than me! I ought to be strong and courageous!)

And yesterday, we had our Soka University of Japan Exchange meeting! The meeting ran rather smoothly. except a few obvious sound system down, but luckily its only for a few seconds. Thankful for the team I worked with, very very very meticulous, always had contingency plans, kept tight communications via callings and meeting up to settle, for my case, culture performance. Thankful to have the 2 chiefs who are guiding us along well, such that we are able to fully run the programme yesterday ourselves. Thankful for the support given by the fellow trailblazers who helped to reach out, contact members, design and make the souvenirs, discuss and decide the dinner reps. Thankful for my culture performers who memorised the japanese song lyrics (which are said to be confusing even to choir trained singers!) within 2 practices and touched the audiences by the brightest and beautiful smiles ever!

끝.

[10 simple tips] How to get decent grades?

This post is by no means showing off how good i am... in fact im not... However, I would like to share with all on how to get better grades or decent grades in UOL program cos Ive been asked by friends many many times...

1. Ask questions!

when in doubt just raise the question! if you are shy or afraid of embarrassment (which you shouldnt feel cos asking questions benefit all and there are no stupid questions UNLESS the teacher has already make it clear that it has to be that way and you are just being anal) just ask during the breaks or after class or even make a consultation!

Asking question is good cos for the whole curriculum, only lectures! no tutorials! and thats it! you paid for it, you know? might as well fully utilise right!

Moreover, you think just consult friends will do? ahem, you never know if they are backstabbers (i dont suspect my friends la but usually Ill ask them and teachers) or you never know if they really know the content! might as well ask the professional right?

But what if the lecturer does not entertain questions like... Manfred,
or the lecturer is so snobbish that the way he/she answers my questions like "Im a stupid leh" like... Seet
or the lecturer seems so fierce in class Im afraid to ask questions!! like... IBM (he's nice btw!)

Dont care them! just ask for the sake of your money and grades!! be thick-skinned!

Been there, done that! For manfred however, I didnt really ask him much cos he's really bochup kind.

Also, for a certain concept that you are not sure, like Econs, you are actually google it or youtube! Ive tried youtube-ing and learnt/revised quite a few concepts!

2. Study at places and timing that you study the best

For instances, I found out the fact that I couldnt study in groups even in neighbourhood library cos too much distraction. So usually, Ill study alone at home (my bro's study room which he didnt fully utilise... end up the sisters took up his space HAHHA) or study with my friends at Bugis Library (super quiet)

Studying with MP3 to some maybe good but I discourage that... cos you are already multitasking! it seems like you can read better or be more awake with that but when it comes to absorbing the text or information it fails! Some says listening to classical music when studying is good... Ive tried that... some point in time, it does seem good but... its always making me feel sleepy!! So now, no more nonsense! Ill stick to the nature music! i.e. no earpiece, no radio just the sound of the rain drops, the breeze, the leaves outside my house!

3. Do your work consistently and dont refer to model answer yet!

Important! though I do procrastinate as well... heh be consistent with your work and then revise it through when nearing the prelims i.e. before March
Think and think through the questions before raising the white flag and check the model answers!
For econs, usually Ill think and think even on bus, I will think through the question again and again for various ways of solving and decipher what the examiner really wants for that question!

4. Use colour pens or post-its or mind maps

For me, I prefer to work with colours! Especially for memorising modules, I find mindmaps good in rounding up what the chapters are about!

5. Be organised

Maybe its me... but i really dont like to study on a table full of mess (with notes and stationeries lying all around) I prefer to stack my notes according and placed it at one side.

6. No phones!

switch it off. leave it at another room or in your bag! No one will contact you when you are busying with your studies!

7. Do pyps!

Download and do them! If you start revision or consistent work early or does not procrastinate, i suppose you should have time to attempt 10years worth of PYP for zone A and B! i.e. 20 papers! woah! For me, I dont really have time to attempt all 10years... a bit too much haha so at most I did was 7years? or 5years? kinda average!

Also, do refer to VLE for any questions or videos tips!! Do go through the subject guides!! They are delivered for a reason! Examiners look for whatever that it being taught in Subject Guides!

Textbooks however, its really up to you! personally I have no time to juggle between outside activities and doing Subject guides, 10years of pyps, go through the notes, doing the past year prelims... For me, I didnt spend on getting textbooks! its quite pricey... I heard from my friend saying for some modules, textbooks are necessary like pbf... not sure if she's right... no textbooks can also get fch!

8. Appropriate amount of snacks

Dont snack too much! firstly, your weight. second, its unhealthy. next, you are studying while sitting down and if you eat way too much can u imagine your belly?? lastly, it distracts!

9. take breaks!

A well deserved 5 mins to 10mins break i.e. toilet break, phone break, walk around, eyes to rest after every 45mins-1hour worth of studying! But, during revision such as when you are timing yourself for exams papers, complete them before you take a break!

10. Healthy diet and balanced lifestyle

Exercise! otherwise you may feel tired easily! have some fish to improve memory! and all those proteins, vitamins, calcium and goodness you need when you study/sit for exams!

Also, the brain has to rest and it will recap and retain things you are memorised or learnt in the day!

OTIA UOL

I have seen quite a few searching for OTIA UOL via google search engine and so I thought I might just be nice and do a short write up about it here...

First, Im from SIM UOL so... Ill give details in my point of view

OTIA refers to Organisation Theory: Interdisciplinary approach.

Interdisciplinary actually illustrates how this module itself merges the ideas from Economics, Sociological and Psychological view points... There are I think 14 chapters? (kinda vague to me already) that go through issues within the organisation e.g. power, culture, democracy and voting rights etc and the whole industry flow e.g. Organisation Evolution (quite a tough chapter I think... cos it involves Darwin theory etc its interesting to know nonetheless)

Exam format: I think there are 8-10questions to choose from, and you just have to do 4 questions you think you will do best in. The questions' CHAPTERS are pretty easy to predict... questions wise, you cant really predict it. But what you can do is to understand the chapters well and do plenty questions on it!

If its not your compulsory unit, if you are NOT a theoretical person, if you are BAD in essay... dont take this. Take other modules like ESAP, or I think ISORG is a better choice even though I didnt take that (thats what I heard from peers)

Lastly, there's only one lecturer who teaches this unit during my year (which is last year =.= 2012-2013) Mr Sunny Goh and... actually he is not bad in teaching it, he likes to bring in own experience to illustrate the ideas but sometimes its a little tad too much. Do ask questions in class if you dont understand! (Dont have to be infront of all students if you are shy... can just ask him during the break!)

SIM UOL Results 2013

Results was supposed to be out on 13 August but it was delayed till Friday, 16 August night time... I remembered before the results was out, I was at a funeral wake... And I wished my friends all the best and... okay hahaha

I would say this year's anxiety was much lesser than the previous years... Asked my sister to log on the results page... and tada! still loading... probably due to high surge in users checking it online

and tada! results out! I told my sister that my target 3As or at the minimum minimal least it has to be 2As...
And an A is above 70.

She said, "hmm u have 2As only" I was damn sad :( she added, "hmm those 2 are above A" I guess she meant high As... and I asked her the question, "can check if its second upper class or first class?"

"its first class honours" Gotten what I wanted from the very beginning! But... it seems like its not enough... not that Im greedy... but I have that regret tingling inside me that I could have done better for Management Math which I failed to secure an A by 3 marks... I skipped one question worth of 8marks when I probably could scribble little bit here n there and... i might get that extra marks... baaaaaaaaaaaaa :(

Actually my results werent that fantastic... I would say its a low first class... but well! at least it is a fch!

MSM 80 (done better in prelims though... I heard a lot of people scored much lower than in prelims)
Microeconomics 88
MM 67 (wasted la)

Updates

So for the benefit of those joining the next summer abroad in SIM or NTU or wherever you are, in SKKU.
I will post some updates.

1) submit online application to SKKU. register on those portal. you can firstly go to their main page for ISS 2014 for that matter. then go to <REGISTRATION> then, <ONLINE APPLICATION>

HERE: http://summer.skku.edu/

Apply as soon as possible to secure your dorm allocation.

2) Update your particulars and passport photo (scanned) and passport (scanned)
Opt for free Korean language class. A Korean Language Module is also offered but only at Suwon Campus.
Opt if you want to have SKKU ISS Health insurance (not travel insurance)
Opt if you want to have Transport from airport to school/dorm.
Choose the modules that you want to take. Normally its 700USD. But i think NTU students just need to pay 420USD. not sure if it applies only for engine students.

3) Wait for them to confirm your application (even without having to update the travel details and insurance page). They will send an email that says your application is confirmed, can proceed to do payment, which may land up in your Junk mail, do check. OR they may miss out, and hence you will not receive the email.

Regardless of the email, for updates, do personally login your SKKU ONLINE PORTAL AT iss.skku.edu to check if the status has changed from  "APPLICATION" to "CONFIRMATION AND PAYMENT"

4) Proceed on to do your payment. In Singapore, doing the Bankwire transfer via POSB or DBS, it is cheaper to do it online (on their page) than at the counter. it costs 25bucks lesser.
For those new to iBanking, do note that for the above mentioned banks, you will need at least 3 working days including saturday for them to assess the application for iBanking and then mail you the iBanking device. Yes. it is a Device.

5) Just to note: Dorm allocation are based on first come first serve basis. so, as mentioned in POINTER 1, register as soon as possible. Even if you have not paid up, its okay. Dorm is based on application submitted.

My friend who registered later, was assigned to the Suwon dorm. SKKU provided a complementary bus ride, not sure if you need to pay onboard. but since its complementary, i suppose not. whichever it is, Suwon dorm will be pretty inaccessible to Seoul i guess...

6) DO YOUR PAYMENT. and you are done! just wait for SKKU and your home school to update you! For SIM, there will be predeparture briefing, which i think is pretty important. for sadly, it crashed with my global revision :(

From what I see, 2013, the school officially starts from July 1 to 19. We will move into the dorm and out of it from June 26 to July 24. So before it starts and after lesson ends, it will be orientation and activities. when school starts, morning class runs from 930-12 and then lunch break for i think an hour. then noon class 130 to 4. Korean language on Tuesday and Thursday, 4-6pm. Activities usually on Wednesdays.

SKKU updates

I have applied for the SIM Summer Abroad 2013 to Korea, studying in SKKU ISS :)

Will be posting updates on that on the application processes and updates on the exchange itself.

The application starts on every Jan of the year, and should end by Feb.

And they should take a few weeks to email you to confirm your application after you've submitted the form itself to the student helpdesk.

DO REGISTER ONLINE ASAP ONCE THE APPLICATION OVERSEAS COMMENCED. this is to avoid being last minute and the shortages of the dorms :)

Motivations

1. TO DO MY FAMILY PROUD

2. I didnt want to waste my money in these 3 years scoring only a mere second lower. yes, i wouldnt settle for the less.

3. I failed to enter the local university. I did badly in A levels.

I DIDNT WANT TO DO LOUSY THIS TIME ROUND.

4. I want to get into a decent job. Only a good honours guarantee me that. Though yes, honours or education aint everything. But wait, for people like me without working background like in Accounting, Data Entry field (yes, even data entry need to have "background") a good honours is a must. And with a good honours, more doors are opened up for me. HEHHEHHEH

5. I want to earn lots and lots of money to help alleviate the pressures on my dad. and also, to pamper pamper them :) by buying stuffs like...

ANDY LAU!!!!!!!!!

NOT!

LOL

the massagie chair he is sitting on!

and... TO TOUR AROUND PLACES LIKE... TAIWAN!

WORK HARD NOW!

8. Degree classification
8.1
Further units normally carry more weight than Foundation units. Marks for Further units are counted individually and in some cases as an average, depending on the number of Foundation units taken and the number of exemptions granted. Foundation units count for up to two marks only.
8.2
A student who is eligible for the award of a degree through the Standard Route having attempted 12 full units and passed in at least 10 full units or the equivalent will be classified according to the classification scheme (given in 8.4 below) on the basis of nine marks, and, where appropriate, the aggregate of those nine marks.
8.3
The nine marks on which the classification is based are drawn from the following.
i. The marks for all Further units considered individually.
ii. If eight Further units and four Foundation units have been attempted, the ninth mark is the average of the best three Foundation units (see also v).
iii. If seven Further units and five Foundation units have been attempted, the eighth mark is the average of the best two Foundation units, and the ninth mark is the average of the next best two Foundation units (see also vi.).
iv. If six Further units and six Foundation units have been attempted, the seventh mark is the average of the best three Foundation units, the eighth mark is the average of the next best two Foundation units, and the ninth mark is the average of all six Further units (see also vii.).
v. Where a student is exempt from one or more Foundation units and has taken Foundation units to bring their total of exemptions and Foundation units to four then:
(a) given one exemption, the ninth mark is calculated in the usual way (see ii.)
(b) given two exemptions, the ninth mark is the average of the two Foundation units taken
(c) given three exemptions, the ninth mark is the Foundation unit taken
(d) given four exemptions, the ninth mark is the average of all the Further units taken.
vi. Where a student is exempt from one or more Foundation units and has taken Foundation units to bring their total of exemptions and Foundation units to five then:
(a) given one exemption, the eighth mark is the average of the best two Foundation units and the ninth mark is the average of the remaining two Foundation units
(b) given two exemptions, the eighth mark is the average of the best two Foundation units taken, and the ninth mark is the remaining Foundation unit taken
(c) given three exemptions, both the eighth and ninth marks are the marks of the two Foundation units taken
(d) given four exemptions, the eighth mark is the mark of the single Foundation unit taken and the ninth mark is the average of all the Further units taken.
vii. Where a student is exempt from one or more Foundation units and has taken Foundation units to bring their total of exemptions and Foundation units to six then:
(a) given one exemption, the seventh mark is the average of the best three Foundation units taken, the eighth mark the average of the next best two Foundation units taken, and the ninth mark is the average of all the Further units taken
(b) given two exemptions, the seventh mark is the average of the best two Foundation units taken, the eighth mark the average of the next best two Foundation units taken and the ninth the average of all the Further units taken
(c) given three exemptions, the seventh mark is the average of the best two Foundation units taken, the eighth mark the remaining Foundation unit taken and the ninth the average of all Further units taken
(d) given four exemptions, both the seventh and eighth marks are the marks of the two Foundation units taken, and the ninth mark is the average of all the Further units taken.

Additionally, when you received your results, there is an option where you can request of recounting of marks. Note. RECOUNTING. NOT RE-MARK. You have to pay 50pounds for the appeal. Appeal only if you are just borderline fail or borderline to the next grade e.g. 33, 1 more mark to passing. Otherwise it is pretty "no use". Or unless you have spare cash and you are simply, risk lover.

Any questions? Just leave a comment la. haha

Choices

Life been good thus far!

Applied for Summer Trip and I cant wait for their reply. too anxious. so much of the anxiety hahahah pls let it be a success for me and my friend(s)! Stepping onto the mud of kimchi land must be surreal then. TILL THEN! Ill post updates on the application process, then everything up till Im back to SG! Yes. it means posting updates and photos in Korea as well! Hopefully la. if the ethernet cable and wifi works well ;P

I actually went for the Summer briefing in SIM. And they introduced us loads of good programs which I have not thought of and seen of before! Im keen in going Korea, but no other program cept' Summer Abroad offers that... so... ugh

But if I do apply for another one, perhaps the period after my exams and before my exchange program in Korea, it will be Global immersion in Finland and Spain... But thats a whopping 4.5k!! PRICEY YES!!! excluding own expenses. meals included.

Or maybe... after summer program in August, an internship overseas say, China. and that costs 2k NETT. But might as well intern in SG right? lol so thats out.

Next! Life after studies...
hmm ive gave much thoughts to it. so prolly ill start with registering for a Master program, scholarship that is. BUT, my results for year1 and 2 arent fantastic you see... so... hopefully they do look at my year 3 results and if they do, my results better be of excellence. Already aiming for all A. If not, 3 A and 1 B :)
Thats my Plan C as posted in FB and Twitter.

So wat bout Plan A and B? Plan A is just working full time at good firms if not SME is fine. Plan B is then internship at some good good companies i.e. Public or Private. Soon be applying. need to get my ass on it!

Choices after Choices. Best is that I can have best of both worlds hahahha! Summer Abroad and Master! and EXCELLENCE RESULTS!

After being accepted into SKKU for Summer School, Ill then post more info on it! Including the expenses and itinerary which Ive planned like a few months ago. HAHAHHAHA yes i do plan things way way way ahead.

and before I end. I TOP MY CLASS FOR LAST MICRO TEST! HAHAHHAHAAHHAHAAH 98.5% HUAT AH time to keep my proudness (proud to have done good), and back to the humbleness :)
